How Assignments, Workshops & Final Exams Are Weighted
AIOU revised its assessment formula in Spring 2023, and it still applies for Autumn 2026. Understanding this weighting helps you plan your study time wisely.
| Component | Weightage | Passing Requirement |
| Assignments | 20% | Not compulsory to pass individually |
| Workshop (attendance/quizzes) | 30% | Not compulsory to pass individually |
| Final Examination | 50% | 40% marks mandatory in the final exam |
| Overall Result | 100% | 50% aggregate marks required to pass the course |
Passing Criteria and the 40% Rule
Here’s the part students often misunderstand: even if your assignment and workshop scores are excellent, you must still score at least 40 marks out of 100 in the final exam. If you don’t reach that 40% threshold in the final exam — even with a good aggregate — you will be marked Fail in that course and required to re-register when it is next offered.
Note: This flexible formula does not apply to Teaching Practice 1 & 2, Research Projects, Long-Term Internships, or similar courses with their own grading scheme — these still require clearing every component, including workshops and projects.
FER1 and FER2 – A Second (and Third) Chance
If you fail to secure 40 marks in your final exam, AIOU allows you to retake it through Failed Exam Registration 1 (FER1) and Failed Exam Registration 2 (FER2) in subsequent semesters, upon request and payment of the required fee. This gives students breathing room instead of forcing a full course re-registration immediately.
AIOU Grading Scheme & GPA System
Depending on when you were enrolled, AIOU applies one of two systems. Programmes admitted from Autumn 2021 onward generally follow the newer GPA scheme below.
| Percentage of Marks | Letter Grade | GPA |
| 85% and above | A | 4.0 |
| 80% – below 85% | A- | 3.7 |
| 75% – below 80% | B+ | 3.3 |
| 70% – below 75% | B | 3.0 |
| 65% – below 70% | B- | 2.7 |
| 60% – below 65% | C+ | 2.3 |
| 55% – below 60% | C | 2.0 |
| 52% – below 55% | C- | 1.7 |
| 50% – below 52% | D | 1.0 |
| Below 50% | F | 0.0 |
Older cohorts may still be assessed under the traditional percentage grading scheme (A+, A, B, C, D, Fail) or the earlier GPA/CGPA table. Your Regional Office or LMS profile will confirm which scheme applies to you.
B.Ed Fee Structure for Autumn 2026
Across most B.Ed programmes (1.5, 2.5, and 4-year tracks, including ADE-based versions), the standard fee structure quoted in the prospectus is as follows:
| Fee Head | Amount |
| Registration Fee (first admission only) | Rs. 700 |
| Admission Fee (first admission only) | Rs. 1,400 |
| Technology Fee + Courier Charges (per semester) | Rs. 850 |
| Course Fee (6 courses × Rs. 4,620 per 3 credit hours) | Rs. 27,720 |
| Total First-Semester Fee | Rs. 30,670 |
Fees are charged per semester based on the number of credit hours you register for, so your total cost will depend on your course load each semester. Always check the latest fee voucher on your LMS/online admission account, since amounts can be revised.

Common Student Concerns, Answered
- “What if I miss the assignment submission date?”Late or missing assignments affect only 20% of your grade, but don’t rely on this — assignments help you prepare for the heavily-weighted final exam, so submit them on time whenever possible.
- “Can I change my chosen specialization cluster later?” Once you select your major clusters (e.g., in the 2nd or 5th semester, depending on the programme), they generally cannot be changed in later semesters — choose carefully at the start.
- “I failed one course. Do I have to repeat the whole semester?” You can use the FER1/FER2 option to retake just the final exam of that specific course in a later semester, rather than repeating everything.
- “Is the medium of instruction Urdu or English?”It depends on the programme. B.Ed 1.5 Years offers English/Urdu, while most B.Ed 2.5 and 4-year programmes are primarily in English — check your specific scheme of studies.
- “Can I exit early with a lower qualification?”Yes, under the HEC Undergraduate Education Policy 2023, most B.Ed 4-year programmes allow an exit after 2 years with an Associate Degree in Education (ADE).
Final Thoughts
